ALUS Canada, A Weston Family Initiative
ALUS Canada is a community-developed, farmer-delivered program that sustains agriculture and the environment for all Canadians, one acre at a time.
The ALUS program invests in farmers and ranchers who produce cleaner air, cleaner water, new wildlife habitats and other ecological services on their acres.
ALUS participants dedicate selected acres of marginal farmland to the production of ecosystem services with significant benefits for the environment, the local community and society as a whole. In this way, ALUS helps farmers and ranchers help us all.
Since 2008, ALUS Canada has established more than 18,000 acres, an area the size of 50,000 hockey rinks, in six provinces. With the support of individuals and organizations across Canada, ALUS will continue to maintain its existing projects and grow significantly, reaching 25,000 acres by the end of 2017.
ALUS has received generous contributions from public and private sources, including our primary partner, The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, as well as all three levels of government and a number of dedicated supporters, all of whom help ALUS put green infrastructure projects on the agricultural landscape.
“We are immensely proud of the work ALUS Canada is doing as part of the clean economy, supporting both economic growth and environmental outcomes,” said Bryan Gilvesy, Executive Director of ALUS Canada, “and soon, we will launch new, innovative tools to help drive dollars towards restoration projects across the country.”
ALUS Canada is widely recognized for its innovative approach to creating new markets for grassroots conservation and for its strong leadership the field of sustainability. ALUS Canada has been the recipient of numerous honours, including:
